Daphne Nichols grew up in the wilderness of Eastern Maine trying to avoid moose and find piano lessons. Initially intrigued by classical music, she schemed about how to make it to a town with stoplights by playing Mozart. Aided by her musical family, she realized her dream at age sixteen when she was accepted to the Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Natick, Massachusetts. Her years at New England Conservatory’s Preparatory Department, North-western University, and Salem College saw her accrue several honors, including Maine’s Ocy Downs Piano Prize and several collegiate full-tuition scholarships in addition to being a finalist in the North Carolina Symphony Concerto Competition.
After graduating with her Bachelor of Music in 2009, Daphne traded in Mozart for originals. Her work is a pop/folk combination with recent jazz influences. A typical lyric will be deep but not sentimental, poetic but not abstruse. Confessional yet universal, her music showcases a full piano texture and a talent for precisely capturing a feeling in song.
Tiny went to the shore And she saw seven mansions with seven doors Sitting in her cell Who in the world could Tiny tell? And she begged not to write her dream For the other men had dreamt so well
"I am a parrot," she said, "Only writing the words I'm given But if you wish I will dig out my pen again And labor on, and labor on"
Mary came up the stair But Tiny could not see her standing there Staring at the sky Tiny kissed the world goodbye And her hand would not stop the writing For it had left them both behind
"I am a parrot," it said, "Only writing the words I'm given But if you wish I will give of myself again And labor on, and labor on"
Tiny lives in a man She only moves within his hand And her life is the proof of loving The one who made this weary land
She is asleep in his hand Only writing the words she's given But when he calls she will come running round again And labor on, and labor on
Sometimes there's nothing around But a skin of silence and a dripping sound And sometimes I lie there and wait For the yellow knife to come and carve out a day
Sometimes there's so much to see A garden of godliness and a rain on me And sometimes there's so much to hear The whisper of a waiting world and an echo in my ear
And it says, "Come home" And it says to me, softly, "Come home To a life you've never known"
Sometimes I follow where I'm led To a man hanging on a cross and a body in my bread And sometimes I build myself a room Where no one can touch me in my soundless tomb
But he says, "Come home" And he says to me "Sweetheart, come home To a life you've never known"
And I bow down to this bold world and I kiss it, The dirty cement, cause something's in it And I've longed to tear a man's heart out and eat it Just to taste his desire
But the flowers, they say to me "Come home" And they say to me, wanting me, "Come home" To a life you've never known
One selfish girl, one selfish man arise Their selfish hands find things to do Time flies
What happens when their eyes meet on the way? Does selfish stop or does it stay?
Dreams keep on chasing me Down streets of gold Oh please, keep on chasing me Till I'm bought and sold
One wiser man, one wiser girl divide A wiser hand will keep them till They die
It happened on a bright October day And it was planned so she could say
That dreams keep on chasing me Down streets of gold Oh please, keep on chasing me Till I'm bought and sold Till I'm bought and sold, till I'm bought and sold
And dreams keep on chasing me Down streets of gold Oh please keep on chasing me Till I'm bought and sold
I'm giving up my reasons I'm going down in blazes I'm gonna fight fire with fire, yeah Tie me up and take me Throw me down and make me Crawl across the desert sand
Cause I'm a devil's girl In a devil's world Dressing up to keep me out of hell
I'm hanging up my hat I'm burning down the gate I'm flooding into every home I'm breaking down the door I'm nailing up a notice: "Wild thing is on the road"
Cause I'm a devil's girl In a devil's world Driving down this highway straight for hell
I've been in this place before But the jungle, it sure can howl Quick, will you bolt the door Before the wind turns my skin inside out?
I'm crawling in the night I'm itching for a break I'm staring down a loaded gun Hunt me down and find me Bend me back and blind me Baby girl is on the run
Cause I'm a devil's girl In a devil's world Dressing up to keep me out of Dressing up to keep me out of Dressing up to keep me out of hell
Here I am again on this merry wheel After a hotdog meal The horses, the lights bobbing up and down The sound of creaking steel It seems so different now It seems so real
I used to come here on its biggest day From miles away What a crazy scene: The crowd, the crush, the heat Enough to make a child amazed And there were cups of ice There was a man with paper mache
Well that was then and this is now And who misses innocence anyhow? But I want to fall, I want to fly I want to ride on this merry go round
These days I wake up oh so slow Pack my lunch and go I try to plan my hand, dream of a bigger band I watch the news for signs of snow How did I get here? Please, does anybody know?
Well something's lost and something's found And who misses innocence anyhow? But I want to fall, I want to fly I want to ride on this merry go round
The painted ponies, they watch the mirrors spin It's time for them to turn in The sun is down, people are leaving town The evening settles on my skin Oh, I'm gonna do it I'm gonna climb in
Well that was then and this is now And I, I miss my innocence somehow So I'm gonna fall, I'm gonna fly I'm gonna cry on this merry go round
